Saving Corals
description
Inspired by my own experience as a diver, seeing the devastating effects of coral bleaching, as well as Exposure Lab's documentary "Chasing Coral", I wanted to create a website to spread awareness about global coral bleaching events, increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change. The site should inform on what corals are, explain the severity and reasons for bleaching as well as its consequences and lay out steps on what to do against it.
After several video editing heavy projects, I decided to create a more fun tool to mix sound-effects than the usual drag, drop, push and pull actions in Premiere. Bruit Brut allows you to create your own sound effect compositions by pressing your keyboard keys. You can also create your own fully customised board, changing sounds and key bindings in the downloadable code.
The website should be visually appealing and interesting, drawing the viewer into the world of corals. The strong visual white on black design draws attention to the corals and their (lack of) bright colors. Typography was chosen in line with recent trends in design, making the topic appeal to a broader audience. It furthermore implements mixed media, from images to videos and 360 degree streetview panoramas to keep the viewer's attention.
To allow other authors to contribute and create content, I decided to make a wordpress-based website, creating an indidual theme for it, using html, php, scss and js. My biggest challenges were to make the menu overlay from a menu that could be edited in the CMS, and to generate the covers from the site title and featured image, with one arrow being hidden on the first and last site.
